John Lennon Memorial in Central Park in New York

On this day of New York visit, in the last stage of coast to coast travel in the United States, after seeing the Guggenheim museum, we decided to return to Central park and cross it wide.

Once we reach the center of Central park, we stop to eat on the shores of a beautiful lake with rowing boats, willows and ducks. We did not go to the restaurant of the rich, we stayed in the cheap, without waiters, without white tablecloths, but the very pleasant food and the beers generously refreshed us.

From there we go to the most emotional and sentimental area of the route,Strawberry Fields, where is the monument in memory of John Lennon, while visiting the Dakota Building in which John lived (for me it's like a friend is childhood).

Strawberry Fields, memorial of John Lennon in Central Park

The name of this garden area comes from the song Strawberry Fields Forever from Lennon and McCartney. It was opened by his widow Yoko Ono, which had supported the project, the day on which John Lennon He had turned 45 on October 9, 1985.

The entrance to the memorial is right in front of the aforementioned Dakota Building, where Lennon lived during the last part of his life, and where he was killed. The monument is a reproduction of a Pompeii mosaic with the inscription of a single word, the title of Lennon's famous song “Imagine”.

The mosaic is located in the center of a triangle designated as quiet zone. People, in a respectful silence, or approaching the mosaic, look at it, some pray, others cry, others deposit a flower, some sit on one of the surrounding benches and silently seem to remember, think.

Souvenirs next to the John Lennon memorial in Central Park

Coinciding with our visit, there was a musician who, with a Spanish guitar, was softly tapping very low volume songs of John. The monument is often covered with flowers, candles and other belongings abandoned by the fans from Lennon.

On Lennon's birthday (October 9) and on the anniversary of his death (December 8), people gather to sing and pay tribute, stay late in what is often a cold night. With sadness we leave this sacred place.

He Dakota It is a building dating from 1884, which you can locate in the northwest corner between the 72nd street and Central Park West. As we have been explained by a tour guide, the building has very strict rules if someone wants to buy an apartment, since it is not enough to have the necessary money to acquire it. Written authorization from the community of neighbors is also essential.

In his day, and despite the notoriety from John Lennon, because its appearance did not like anything to the rest of tenants of the building, this authorization was granted.

In front of the door of the building is where John Lennon was killed. And although there is no plaque or symbol that attests to it, it has become a place of pilgrimage for many people, who are usually photographed in front of the Dakota and, also, take photos directly to the ground, in the place where he supposedly fell already deceased.

Anyway, we just thought of saying "Thank you John" and we walked to Columbus Circus with its famous sculpture of the globe, which is where we take the subway back to the hotel.

Upon arriving at the hotel we took a walk around the hotel, we connected to the internet in the lobby and finally to rest in the room after all the cures of my scars.
